Recently named 2017 CT ARTS HERO by the CT Office of the Arts for her “tireless effort and dedication… doing extraordinary things in the arts in Connecticut”, Joy Supples is Grasso Technical High School’s visual arts teacher. For the past 17 years, she has taught a variety of courses in visual arts, including Advanced Placement Art. She has showcased student art work in countless art shows and displays, and connected students to Southeastern CT's thriving local arts community. Ms. Supples was also recently named 2017 Teacher of the Year for Grasso Tech!
In addition to her role as a teacher, Ms. Supples is active in the visual arts community on local, regional, and State levels. Ms. Supples served on the Connecticut Arts Standards Team (CAST) as the project leader for model curriculum development. Prior to this important work, she was part of the CT Visual Arts Curriculum Review - a team whose mission is to support the CT Arts Standards Adoption Initiative. She is active in the local arts community, as well. Ms. Supples founded and directed the CT SUB TRAIL community art project and fundraiser and is a partner of the Southeastern CT Cultural Coalition - an organization that connects culture and arts to Southeastern Connecticut economy. She is also a member of the Regional Arts Council at LEARN.
Her 13+ years of service to the CT Technical High Schools’ visual art steering committee has allowed her to advocate for the visual arts in many ways. She co-authored the CTHSS art Program of Studies, various art curricula, and the CTHSS visual arts mission. She coordinates resources for her district’s art teachers, and co-organized the CTHSS annual art show. In February 2015, Ms. Supples co-authored “Why the Visual Arts Matter” and presented it to the CTHSS Board of Education, explaining how visual arts support the needs of career technical education and Connecticut’s industries.
Ms. Supples obtained her M.S. in Educational Leadership with a focus on Administration and Curriculum Development from Central Connecticut State University. She holds a B.S. in Art Education from Southern Connecticut State University, and an A.S. in Architectural Design Technology from Three Rivers Community College. Prior to making the switch to teaching art, Ms. Supples was an architectural designer. She has lived in Southeastern Connecticut for over 30 years and is a proud resident of Groton, Connecticut.
