CT SUB TRAIL public art projectInterdisciplinary | Real-World Community Connections
The Grasso Tech Art Department participated in the CT SUB TRAIL Public Art Project - a public art project that celebrates the Connecticut Submarine Century, As declared by Governor Malloy. By participating in this project, students were able to create visual symbolism to celebrate our local culture and developed an appreciation for our defense industry. In April 2016, art students completed design proposals for the CT SUB TRAIL Call to Artists. Out of over 30 submissions submitted to the CT SUB TRAIL art committee, three students' designs were selected by the committee to become part of the 21 submarine fleet. The winning designs are: Dolphin Submarine by Maria Fiestas, '17 (on display at Grasso Tech) Submarine Submarine by Mike Whittle, '17 ( on display at the Mystic Aquarium) and Patriotic Puzzle by Adrian Vega, '16 (on display at UCONN Avery Point Campus, Groton). The painting and collages of each of the the subs were completed by the artists and the Grasso Tech Art Department in the spring, and were placed on display in July. See some of the student's work in progress here. CT SUB TRAIL gained lots of media attention from local , regional and national news! In addition to receiving accolades from the media, the winning students participated in the Launching of the Fleet art reception held at Grasso Tech on June 24, marched with the CT SUB TRAIL float in the Groton July 4 parade, and are featured in the CT SUB TRAIL app. See the student's designs on display in Southeastern CT until the end of October 2016.
